In less than one hour, Matt York covered 400 meters in the water, 12 miles on a bike, and 3.1 miles running to take the Lake Max Triathlon on Saturday, Aug. 9. York was the overall winner with a time of 56 minutes, 28.8 seconds. Elizabeth Blackburn was the overall women’s winner with a time just under 1:06.07.
Lake Max is a USAT-certified triathlon. It begins and ends at the Naval Building on the Culver Academies campus. The swimming course travels around the Naval Pier. The biking course goes around Lake Maxinkuckee, and the 5-kilometer run weaves through the town of Culver.
Winning the men’s masters division was Greg Gossert in a time of 1:01.20. Angelia Kniesly won the women’s master division in 1:10.56. There were 14 different age divisions for men and women, ranging from 11-and-under to 75-to-79 years old. The oldest competitor was William Pauley at 79. He finished the course in 1:56.13.
The men’s team competition was won by Slow, Bald & Canadian in 1:11.04. Camp Mitchell won the women’s team division in 1:21.22. The co-ed division went to Fruehwirth/Lopez with a time of 1:05.01. There were two men’s teams, five women’s teams, and nine co-ed teams.
The first Lake Max Kids Triathlon was conducted after the race with Maxwell Malloy taking the boys 5-7 age group and Elizabeth Bentley winning the girls 5-7 group. The five to seven-year-olds swam 50 meters, biked for one mile, and ran for a half-mile. Malloy finished in 11 minutes, 34.3 seconds and Bentley won in 12:23.8. Will Moore won the boys 8-11 grouping, covering 75 meters swimming, two miles on the bike, and a one-mile run in 14:09.9. Sophie Cavanaugh won the girls division in 14:48.6.
All the proceeds from the triathlon go to the local Lions, Kiwanis, and Culver clubs to help with their humanitarian causes. A total 385 people participated in this year’s Triathlon. Click for complete results
