Two movies that include scenes shot at Culver Academies are now available online and on DVD.
Rodeo Girl stars Kevin Sorbo and newcomer Sophie Bolen. The plot revolves around a young teenage girl who moves to Michigan to live with her estranged father, a former Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association rider. The daughter, who has a background with hunter jumpers, becomes fascinated by the rodeo lifestyle and wants to compete in the National Youth Rodeo.
The movie was filmed in Grand Rapids, Mich., but when the original riding hall selected for the jumping competition scenes was destroyed in a fire, the crew connected with the Culver Horsemanship Department about using the Vaughn Equestrian Center (watch the news story). Culver’s horses and riders participated in the filming, which took place on Jan. 25, 2105. Junior Ally Vaughn (Fulton, Ohio) is included in the movie’s trailer.
Little Savages is set in Culver and uses several locations around the Academies. The movie was filmed during August 2013 and stars Jamie Kennedy and Disney Channel favorites Katherine McNamara, Leigh-Allyn Baker, and Kenton Duty. The plot involves a boy genius, his sister, and their new friends, the Savages, racing against bullies to find a treasure hidden by an eccentric philanthropist. Several local people served as extras.
