Mid Ams begin Thursday

The Culver Military Academy basketball team repeated as Class 3A sectional 19 champs, coming back from 10 points down with 6:36 left in fourth quarter to take the win.

Deontae Craig hit the second of two free throws with just .02 showing on the clock to give the fourth-ranked Eagles the 48-47 victory over the No. 6 Mishawaka Marian Knights. He was fouled going up for a shot after snaring the rebound of a Trey Galloway jumper.

Culver advances to the LaPorte regional, where the Eagles will face Hammond in the first game of the day. The game will start at 11 a.m. (Eastern). LaPorte High School, 602 F Street, is in the Central time zone. The second game of the regional is West Lafayette vs. Calumet at 1 p.m. (Eastern). The regional championship will be at 8 p.m. (Eastern). Max 98.3 will carry the CMA games live and online.

The Eagles are now 19-6 on the season. Hammond advanced to the regional with a 52-40 victory over Gary West. The Wildcats are 19-5.

Varsity A seeking No. 26

Varsity A will be traveling to Fort Wayne for the Indiana State High School Hockey Association Class 4A state title game Saturday evening. The Eagles will face the Central Indiana Knights at 6:30 p.m. in the SportONE Parkview Icehouse (3869 Ice Way). CMA will be looking for its 26th state crown.

CMA advanced with pool play wins over Penn (5-2), Zionsville (3-2), and Carmel (6-1). Central Indiana advanced with wins over Lake Central (6-2), South Bend St. Joseph (1-0), and Lakeshore-St. Joe (7-4).

In a home-and-home weekend two weeks ago, the teams tied 5-5 at the Fishers Forum and CMA won 8-5 at home. Summit City Sports will be carrying the game live on its YouTube channel.

Mid Ams start Thursday

The CMA Prep, 16U and CGA Prep hockey teams will all head east for the Pittsburgh area to begin play Thursday in the Mid Am Districts tournament. CMA Prep and 16U will be playing at the UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex  in Cranberry Township, Pennsylvania. Prep will open pool play against Gilmour Academy at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, followed by the Esmark Stars at 4:15 p.m. Friday, and the Cleveland Barons on Saturday at 4:30 p.m. U16 will play the Cleveland Barons at 2 p.m. on Friday, followed by the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite at 8 a.m. Saturday and Tri State at 6:45 p.m. Saturday.

CGA Prep will be playing at the Baierl Ice Complex in Warrendale, Pennsylvania. CGA will play Gilmour Academy at 4:40, Saturday, and the 19U Penquins Elite at 1 p.m., Sunday.
