The following student-athletes were recognized as the October Athletes of the Month.
From CGA: Kayla Trefren
Kayla Trefren, a senior from Culver, is the three-time Most Valuable Pplayer of the Culver Girls Academy volleyball team. Her abilities and talents have carried the team through a rebuilding process that turned the program into a legitimate contender in a very competitive region. She leads the team in kills and blocks, and her front-row play at the net has been the anchor for both the team’s offense and defense. This season, Trefren was given the third contact 754 times and asked to score the point.
According to Coach Alex Ericson, “Kayla learns, processes, and transfers knowledge and skill exceptionally well — as she rounded her game this season into a primary passer, digger, and server in the back row. She sets the standard of performance at practice with her effort, having never been beaten in any drill, race, or other competition. She has served as captain and leader, and with her graduation this spring, the team will have a large hole to fill.”
From CMA: Patrick Kline
Patrick Kline, a First Classman from Culver, leads the team in total points, scoring 10 goals and adding 9 assists. Throughout the season as a varsity soccer co-captain, Paddie’s efforts helped guide the Eagles to a 13-3 record and another Northern Indiana Soccer Conference title. During the playoffs, he scored both goals in the opening round, a 2-1 win over highly touted Warsaw. He added an assist in the conference winner over Argos the Thursday before.
According to Coach Kevin Green, “Paddie truly led by example. He was First Team All-Conference, and earned the team’s Most Valuable Player Award, an award voted on by the players. Paddie was one of the most dedicated players I have ever coached. He was a valuable asset to the team due to his versatility and understanding of the game.”
