Two teams advanced in state tournament competition on Saturday, Feb. 2. The CGA swimming team will be represented in seven events at the state meet in Indianapolis on Feb. 8-9 and the wrestling team will be sending six wrestlers to the Merrillville Semi-State on Feb. 9.
CGA won its second straight sectional title, besting the field of 13 teams with 445 points. Second was host Warsaw with 382. Junior Eberle Miller (Logansport, Ind.) had four first-place finishes, winning the 200 freestyle (2:01.37), the 100 backstroke (:58.65), and swimming two legs on the winning 200 medley (1:52.77) and 400 freestyle (3:47.84) relays.
Junior Rory Byrne (South Bend, Ind.) won in the 200 individual medley (2:14.29) and also swam legs in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. Senior Lauryn Robinson (Los Angeles) won the 100 freestyle (:56.41) and was also a member of the 200 medley and 200 freestyle (1:46.92) relay teams.
Other winning relay team members were sophomore Jaclyn Schutjer (Mansfield, Ohio) and seniors Betsy Whitfield (Carmel, Ind.), Sarah Jamieson (Valparaiso, Ind.), and Anna Zaccaria (Glen Ellyn, Ill.).
The wrestling team finished in third place (108.5 points) behind powerhouses Penn (221) and Mishawaka (160.5). Three wrestlers finished as regional runners-up at Rochester: junior Kayla Miracle (Bloomington, Ind.) at 120 pounds; 138-pound senior Athony McHugh (Lewis Center, Ohio), and 160-pound junior Edmond Hogan (Itasca, Ill.).
Another senior Edward Hogan (Itasca, Ill.) finished third at 152 pounds, while 145-pound junior David Zajac (Avon Lake, Ohio) and 132-pound sophomore Noah Trevino (Gary, Ind.) finished fourth. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance.
Senior Danny Williams (Franklin, Ind.) finished fifth at 170 and is an alternate. Two others wrestlers, senior Collin Parker (Warsaw, Ind.) at 195 and junior Collin Pepper (Wheatfield, Ind.), each finished sixth.
The swimming preliminary heats will be held on Friday, Feb. 8, in the Natatorium at Indiana University Purdue University, Indianapolis. The wrestling semi-state will begin Saturday at 9:30 a.m. (EST) at Merrillville High School.
