Walk is May 10
May 2, 2019

There is still time to register for the Relay For Life of Culver, which is Friday, May 10, from 7-to-11 p.m. The walk to benefit the American Cancer Society is approaching the $1 million mark in funds raised since its inception in 2008.

Relay will be headquartered next to the Culver Academies’ Naval Building, with part of the route following Lake Maxinkuckee. It will angle toward the flag poles and cut across the grass back to the Naval Building, coordinator Dana Neer said.

The first Relay organized and run by high school students in the country, Culver Academies has hosted the event since its inception. It draws students, parents, faculty, staff, and alumni. They are joined by students, faculty, and staff from Culver Community School Corp. and the Culver community in general.

Neer is hoping more individuals will come out to enjoy the evening. Local food vendors will be available, so people can eat dinner and then possibly walk a few laps or visit with people who are walking. He added that it is not necessary for people to stay until the end.

Activities will include an obstacle course, volleyball, spike ball, corn hole, and various family games. Local bands will also play during the event. The Luminary Ceremony is scheduled for 9:30 p.m.

People and teams can register by going to the Relay For Life of Culver site. People can also donate or support a team or individual at the same site.

The American Cancer Society has recognized Culver as one of the top five small community fundraisers in the nation, presenting the group with a national Pace Setter award. The banner is hanging in the Siegfried Fitness Center.

The 2019 goals have been set at 50 percent participation by students at Culver Academies and Culver Community High School; and 30 percent for the faculty and staff from both schools. A total of 30 businesses will be serving as sponsors.

Along with running the walk, the students will be divided into teams based on dorms and barracks on campus and by class year at Culver Community. Each team will be sponsored by a business.
