Marie Steiner ’16 and Ignas Masiulionis ’17 were honored by the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association as the IBCA/Subway Players of the Week for Dec. 7-12. This is the first time Culver Academies has had two players selected in the same week.
Steiner (Pull, Switzerland) and Masiulionis (Vilnius, Lithuania) are two of six players (three boys, three girls) selected for the weekly recognition statewide. They received the award for District 1.
Steiner, a 5-foot, 9-inch senior guard, averaged 22.3 points and 4.3 rebounds over three games for the Culver Girls Academy (7-5). The Hamilton (N.Y.) College recruit netted 30 points with four rebounds, three assists, and two steals as the Eagles defeated Culver Community, 59-42. Steiner then tallied 26 points with five rebounds, two assists, and three steals in a 60-30 decision over North Judson. She completed her week with 11 points and four rebounds in a 57-21 decision over South Bend Riley.
The 6-foot, 1-inch Masiulionis averaged 29.5 points in leading Culver Military (2-2) to a pair of victories. He opened his week by scoring 30 points with two rebounds and one assist in a 50-48 victory over Tippecanoe Valley. The junior guard followed by tossing in 29 points with eight rebounds and one assist in a 66-53 triumph over Portage. For the week, Masiulionis sank 19-of-31 shots, including 13-of-21 3-pointers, plus 8-of-13 free throws.
