The Culver Academies speech team reached another milestone, winning its third-consecutive Central Indiana Forensic League (CIFL) Championship. Since joining the CIFL in 2014, Culver has dominated the conference with the performance of their first-year novices and young veteran members, head coach Mitch Barnes said.
Co-captains for the 49-member team are senior Katie Bevil (Omaha, Neb.) and first-classmen Ethan Carter (Aurora, Colo.), and Clay Kingsbury (Raleigh, N.C.).
The team competed in four of the six CIFL after-school meets this season, establishing a strong lead in early November. In January, Culver repeated as the CIFL winter tournament champions, then brought home the conference title earlier this month. The team has one regular season meet left, Chesterton High School’s Skeffington Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
The students and coaches will then focus on winning their fourth consecutive sectional championship at Lafayette McCutcheon on Feb. 27. The state finals will be conducted at Fishers High School near Indianapolis on March 12.
