The final group of Culver student-athletes were recently recognized as the May Athletes of the Month.
From CMA: Junior 4 Rowers
The Junior 4 rowers (above), comprised of Corbin Steck ’20 (Decatur, Illinois), Charlie Jones ’20 (Bloomington, Indiana), Jacob Page ’20 (Granger, Indiana) and Nathan Cesarski ’19 (Columbus, Indiana), finished off a stellar spring season with a national championship win. After taking the regional championship in Ohio and the Midwest Scholastic Regatta, they advanced to the U.S. and Canadian Scholastic National Championships in New Jersey, where they captured the gold medal. It was the first scholastic national title in Culver rowing history.
According to Coach Nathan Walker, “From Day One, the expectations and stellar examples set by the senior leaders on the men’s rowing team set a new tone for practices that the rest of the team enthusiastically bought into. While there were certainly ups and downs over the year’s training, there was always that bedrock, positive embrace of the competitive process that started with the seniors, and which saw everyone improve as rowers, most notably the gentlemen in the Men’s Junior Four.”
Shane Pursch ’18 (Tippecanoe, Indiana) is four-year varsity letter-winner in track and field. Over his career, Shane has advanced to the state meet in three different events. This May, he won sectional titles in the 800 and 1600. He also finished first in the 1600 at the regional and followed that with a 11th place finish at the state meet in a time of 4:17.37.
According to Head Coach Mike Chastain, “Shane has been a leader on our squad in performance and in work ethic for the past three years. He listens to constructive criticism and continues to strive for excellence.”
From CGA: Emily Lipsett
Emily Lipsett ’18 (LaPorte, Indiana) is a three-year captain of the varsity softball team and played a considerable role in guiding the squad to its first sectional title game in 10 years. Emily has been an offensive juggernaut, leading the Eagles in almost every category.
Her statistics include an impressive fifth place state ranking for 36 stolen bases and ninth place state ranking for her .630 batting average. Emily did not strike out once this season. According to Coach Dawn Minas, “Emily is a true leader by example. She is a positive role model for her teammates, supporting them through the most successful season in 11 years!”
As a member of the CGA varsity track team, Marissa Rivera ’20 (Columbus, Indiana) finished ninth in the 800 meter run at the IHSAA state meet on Friday. Her time was 2:15.64. That comes after a finishing second at the regional and winning sectional titles in the 1600, 800, and as a member of 4×400 relay. She also was on the 6th place state 4×400 relay as a freshman.
Earlier in the season, Marissa broke the CGA school record in the 800 by nearly one second. According to Coach Mike Chastain, “Marissa has worked hard this season to overcome injuries suffered in the winter, but she has been steadfast at improving to become one of the best 800 runners in the state.”
IndyStar Athlete of the Week
Jackson Gray ’21 (San Rafael, California) was also honored as the Boys Lacrosse Athlete of the Week by the IndyStar for the week ending May 25. Gray was selected after scoring four goals in the Eagles’ state quarterfinals victory over Guerin Catholic.
