The Culver Academies Speech team sent 34 state qualifiers to the 2014 Indiana High School Forensic Association (IHSFA) State Speech tournament in Fishers March 15. Seventeen competitors broke to the semi-final rounds, and five of those semi-finalists broke to the finals.

Finalists included: Hayes Barnes/Emily Hernandez, runners-up in Scripted Duo; Barnes, third place, Poetry Interpretation; Sandra Smith, fourth place, Discussion; Tyler Sorg, fourth place, Broadcast; and Katrina Willis, fifth place, Original Oratory.

Semi-finalists were: Katie Bevil/Kirsten Pressler, Scripted Duo; Sydney Briel/Stephanie Ma, Scripted Duo; Dana Brown, Declamation; David Brown, Impromptu; David Brown, U.S. Extemporaneous; Ethan Carter,  Prose Interpretation; Lauren Engelbrecht, Humorous Interpretation; Yen-Yen Gao, Impromptu; Erin Luck, Humorous Interpretation; Destini Pimental, Discussion; Ben Snyder, International Extemporeous; and Peter Talbot, Broadcast

By virtue of their runners-up finish, Barnes and Hernandez were named First Team All-State while Smith, Sorg, Willis received Second Team All-State honors. These individual and team efforts culminated in Culver placing third among the state’s 33 Class 2A schools and seventh overall in the sweepstakes competition, which is open to all participating teams in Indiana.
