These two athletes were honored as the August/September Athlete of the Month.
From CGA: Jordi Blackburne
Jordan Blackburne, a senior from Plymouth, Ind., is a captain on the varsity soccer team. She has helped direct the team to an 8-1-2 record and a top-20 team ranking in the MaxPreps state poll. Over the season, Blackburne totaled 9 points – 3 goals and 6 assists.
Coach Eric Schmidt said Blackburne’s skill and creativity have helped her to become one of the team’s leading goal scorers over the past three years and the team leader in assists the past two seasons. She also profoundly impacted the program with her leadership and character over her four career. She regularly stays after practice to work with her teammates on individual skills and provides feedback to all 11 players on the field when she’s on the sideline.
From a larger perspective, she’s been an integral part of articulating and implementing a positive and inclusive culture within the CGA soccer program, Schmidt added. Her unyielding positivity has been transformative for the team and helped to push it to new heights. Blackburne is the ultimate blend of productivity and leadership. It is no surprise her teammates lovingly referred to her as “Mama Bird.”
From CMA: Jakob Young
Jake Young, a first classman from Plymouth, Ind., has played an integral role in the CMA varsity football team’s offensive attack. He has a team-leading 53 carries for a total of 270 yards – a 5.1 average. His six rushing touchdowns have helped guide the Eagles to a 4-2 record against a demanding schedule. However, Young’s efforts on offense are paralleled on the defensive side of the ball. As a his middle linebacker, he has 28 solo tackles, four tackles for loss, five quarterback sacks, and a fumble recovery.
According to Coach Andy Dorrel, “Jake Young is making the most of his senior football season, leading the Eagles in nearly every offensive and defensive category. Jake is a consummate team player whose gritty play elevates and inspires teammates to perform at their best. He continues to earn the respect of coaches and teammates as a captain who leads by actions and not simply words. In fact, Jake is the only member of our team to start on both offense and defense every game this season, a testament to his workman-like approach and competitive grit. Jake epitomizes a team-first approach as he is not concerned with individual stats but only the team’s success. It is a pleasure coaching Jake Young as his on-field productivity is superb, and the manner in which he models leadership off the field inspires others to be all they can be.”
