Varsity A repeats as state champs

Tickets for the Culver Military basketball semi-state game at Lafayette Jefferson High School are now on sale at the Culver athletic office from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday. Tickets are $8 each and are good for both the CMA-New Castle game at 1 p.m. (EDT) and the Class 4A contest between South Bend Riley and the Carmel Greyhounds at 3 p.m. Advance sale tickets must be purchased at the athletic office.

Lafayette Jeff is located at 1801 S. 18th St., Lafayette. The winner advances to the state championship at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Saturday, March 24.

The Eagles advanced with a 72-48 victory over Hammond and 50-43 championship victory over West Lafayette at the LaPorte regional last Saturday. New Castle advanced with a 77-70 win over Marion in the title game and a 49-35 victory over Angola in the early contest. The fourth-ranked Eagles (Class 3A) are now 21-6. New Castle is 27-2 and finished the regular season ranked No. 1.

Several radio and television stations will be carrying the game Saturday. Stations include:

WHME (Channel 46) in South Bend and WHMB (Channel 40) in Indianapolis. Channel 40 will also carry a livestream broadcast.

Regional Radio Sports Network in northern Indiana.


Varsity A repeated as state champs with a 4-3 win over the Central Indiana Knights.

Back-to-back state championships

The Culver Military Academy Varsity A hockey made it two in a row Saturday night, coming from behind in the third period to take a 4-3 state title victory against the Central Indiana Knights.

The Eagles scored first in the second period and the Knights quickly tied it at 1-1. Captain Tim Perea’s second goal made it 2-1 before the Knights scored the next two goals to take a 3-2 lead with 7:44 remaining in the final period.

But the Eagles scored at the 5:14 mark when Sam Ballard scored on a power play, followed by the game-winner by Kenneth Gill off assists by Michael and Time Perea with 2:33 remaining. Nick Gill was the winning goalie with 22 saves.

CMA Prep hockey is headed to Philadelphia for Nationals.

Prep hockey headed to Nationals

The CMA Prep hockey team is headed back to the Tier I 18U national tournament after running off four wins at the Mid-Am qualifier this past weekend. CMA defeated Esmark, 7-3, in the championship to advance. In the qualifying rounds, CMA beat the Cleveland Barons, 4-0, Esmark 3-1, and Gilmour Academy, 2-0.

The nationals will be hosted by the Philadelphia Junior Flyers in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The tournament will be played April 5-9. The Eagles are currently 40-3-1 and ranked No. 1 in the nation.
