Two fall season student-athletes have been recognized as the October Athletes of the Month.
From CGA: Marissa Rivera
Marissa Rivera, a sophomore from Columbus, Indiana, was the No. 2 runner for the CGA cross country team as a freshman and returned this year to finish as the No. 1 girl in each race.
Her efforts and performance made Rivera an all-sectional and all-regional team pick. She finished fifth at the sectional, fifth in the regional (a new personal record) and then set another PR at the New Prairie semi-state – breaking 20 minutes for five kilometers for the first time.
According to Coach Mike Chastain, “Marissa’s work ethic and dedication are positive factors in her annual and seasonal improvement. She is a great teammate. She will come back her junior year as one of the top distance runners in north-central Indiana.”
From CMA: Varsity Tennis Squad
The CMA Varsity Tennis Team was comprised of 14 players, but the starting eight were comprised of Ian Smith, Niko Warnholtz, Pat Wilson, Jose Santiago Peraza, Henry Bilicic, Peter Gallagher, Vince Huang, and Sebastian Rodriguez.
Collectively, the team advanced to the state finals for the third time in four years, finishing this season with a final regular-season ranking of 16th in the state. Overall, the team finished with a 21-3 record with a combined match record of 77-23. The Eagles advanced to the Final Four for the first time since 2007 when CMA made its deepest run by playing in the championship match.
According to Coach Alan Loehr, “You have to respect the time and effort the boys put into their successful season. They remained committed to the game and supported each other throughout a demanding schedule. It was a pleasure working with them this season.”
