The Global Studies Institute and Confucius Classroom hosted performers from the Zhejiang University of Technology for special concert Thursday. The evening of Chinese instrumental and vocal music, along with dance and martial arts, capped off the Spring Festival celebration, better known as Chinese New Year.
Professor Jianyun Meng, director of the Valparaiso University’s Confucius Institute, explained each number to the audience gathered in the Heritage Room of the Legion Memorial. Thursday’s program was sponsored by the Confucius Institute. The nine students had to audition for the opportunity to tour in the United States, he said.
The performance was the highlight of the Spring Festival celebration on campus. Culver students from China and of Chinese heritage held a four-day celebration and learning experience on campus last week. The Spring Festival ran from Feb. 5-15 this year.
Culver Academies maintains a Confucius Classroom as part of the Global Studies Institute. The partnership between Culver and Valparaiso, with support from the Confucius Institute in Beijing, promotes the study of Chinese language and culture, encourages exchange programs with China, sponsors public events for the wider community, and enhances the understanding and friendship between the young people of China and the United States.
Culver also has a sister school program set up with the Shanghai Foreign Language School.
