Culver Girls Academy alumna Waverly Neer ’11 finished fifth in the 10,000-meter run at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday night. Neer’s Oregon Ducks teammate Molly Grabill finished fourth, edging past Neer at the wire. Grabill finished in 33 minutes, 26.61 seconds and Neer finished in 33.26.98. Both times were personal bests.
The four/five finish was higher than anticipated by Oregon coaches. The combined finish, which were the eighth and ninth best times in the school’s history, provided the Ducks with a nine-point advantage over Arkansas heading into the weekend competition.
“At the end of the day, form charts don’t really mean a lot,” the four-time All-American Neer told GoDucks.com. “In your heart you know what you can do, and I think Molly and I believed in each other. I don’t think we’re surprised by the results; obviously we’re super excited, but we’re not surprised.”
The championships are being conducted at the University of Oregon’s Hayward Field. The men’s and women’s championships are being broadcast on the ESPN networks. Oregon also leads the men’s competition by 24 points over Florida.
