Former Culver Girls Academy soccer standout Dineo Mmutla ’11 can add national champion to her resume. Mmutla was a starting midfielder for the third-ranked William Smith soccer team that defeated No. 2 Trinity, 2-0, to win the NCAA Division III championship on Dec 7. The Herons advanced by defeating Capital University, 1-0, in the semifinals.
Mmutla started all 22 matches she appeared in during the season, scoring three goals and assisting on two others. She scored 52 seconds into overtime to lift the Herons over Vassar, 1-0. Her third tally of the year against then No. 7 Ithaca, gave William Smith a 1-0 victory and sent the Herons to the national semifinals in San Antonio. The Herons finished the season 23-1-0.
Mmutla, a junior, was named to the ECAC Upstate Women’s Soccer All-Stars late last week. She was also named to the Liberty League first team. As a freshman, she was the Liberty League Rookie of the Year and a first team All-Liberty League pick.
