When Notre Dame football fans Paul Linehan and Jason Michelson received the opportunity to attend one of the Fighting Irish’s practices at Culver Academies, they didn’t realize they would end their day being inducted into an “exclusive” club in the Vaughn Equestrian Center.
But, thanks to a mutual friend Patrick Brent, Linehan and Michelson were inducted into the “9 Goal Club” by Director of Horsemanship Operations Ed Little. The club is Brent’s creation and refers to the polo handicap system for players. Brent and Little met while they were playing at the Menlo Park Polo Club in San Jose, California, during the 1960s and ‘70s. Little is also a member of the club.
Linehan and Michelson each received a polo mallet painted Notre Dame blue and gold, a gold polo ball nestled in a Culver Black Horse Troop mug, and “official” club shirt and bag. Little made the presentation on behalf of Brent, who arranged for the two men to watch the Irish practice at Culver
Brent attended the University of Notre Dame and is an avid Irish sports fan. A successful businessman and journalist, Brent visited the university earlier this summer. While on campus, he interviewed Michael Bennett, the University of Notre Dame athletics photographer who passed away Wednesday.
