Jacob Kanak ’16 (Marshall, Wis.) has received a four-year Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps scholarship to attend the University of Notre Dame. Kanak will also play lacrosse for the nationally ranked Irish next season.

The scholarship, valued at $180,000, was presented by Staff Sgt. Juan Nino of the Marine Corps Recruiting Station in Indianapolis. Kanak will be one of more than 100 students, called “midshipmen,” at the University of Notre Dame and St. Mary’s College training and preparing for future careers as Navy and Marine Corps officers.

Along with his NROTC duties during the school year, Kanak will participate in four to six weeks of professional training each summer to broaden his understanding of the Navy and Marine Corps and to aid in his service selection decision prior to commissioning. After graduation, Kanak will be commissioned as a second lieutenant and serve a four-year commitment as a Marine Corps officer.

Notre Dame’s NROTC program focuses on academics, leadership, physical fitness, and community involvement. NROTC Notre Dame hosts a weekend conference every spring called Naval Leadership Weekend where NROTC units from across the country come to South Bend. Notre Dame midshipmen also participate regularly in physical fitness testing to maintain healthy lifestyles and lead more effectively. The program encourages community involvement through the Trident Naval Society, the battalion-led community service organization.
