It’s tournament time for hockey and basketball. CMA Varsity A hockey is playing for its third straight state title; CMA basketball is playing in the Class 3A regional; and CMA Prep, U16 and CGA Prep hockey are all playing in the Mid-Am tournament in the Cleveland area.
CMA Prep will kick off the tournament weekend with an opening game against the Ohio Blue Jackets at 5 p.m., Thursday. U16 will play its first game at noon on Friday against the Esmark Stars. Both team will play at the OBM Arena, 15381 Royalton Road, Strongsville, Ohio.
CGA will begin its tournament run with a 9:20 p.m. game on Friday against host Gilmour Academy. The rink is located at 2045 SOM Center Road, Gates Mills, Ohio.

CMA will play Hanover Central in the first game of the Class 3A regional at 10 a.m. Saturday. The regional is being conducted at South Bend Washington’s Great Western Forum. An Eagles’ victory will move them into the championship game at 8 p.m. against the winner of the Hammond-West Lafayette game.
South Bend Washington High School is located at 4747 W Washington St. Tickets will be $7/session or $10 for both sessions. The regional games will be broadcast live online via Broadcastsports.net. Simply select the regional button on the home page and enter your zip code to get access.
CMA advanced with wins over Jimtown (48-35), Washington (76-60), and Mishawaka Marian (52-41). The Eagles have now won three straight sectional crowns and will be looking to repeat as regional champion on Saturday.
Varsity A will be facing Zionsville in the Class 4A championship game of the Indiana State High School Hockey Association. The game will be played at the Midwest Ice Arena, located at 10600 White Oak Ave., Dyer, Ind. The puck will drop at 7:30 p.m. (EST) or 6:30 p.m. (CST). Dyer is in the Central time zone.
CMA recently played Zionsville in a home-and-home series, tying 2-2 at the Carmel Ice Skadium and winning in the Al Clark Rink, 5-1. The Eagles are seeking their third straight title.
Varsity A advanced to the championship game with victories over Lakeshore St. Joseph (Mich.), Penn, and South Bend Adams. The Eagles outscored their opponents, 14-2, in those contests.
Varsity A’s Sam Lucchese ’19 (Elkhart, Ind.) was awarded the Robert Gilliken Award, one of four honors given to Indiana high school hockey players. Since 2015, winners of the four awards have also received a $1,000 schoalrship.
Lucchese is the third CMA player to be honored by the ISHSHA. Andy Cesarski ’87 and Michael Wortell ’10 were the recipients of the Matt Crace Memorial Award. The awards are based on academic achievement, citizenship, community and school contributions, dedication, and sportsmanship.
