Former Culver Military Academy rugby player Nick Flynn ’07 will be part of the combined Armed Forces Sevens team at the Las Vegas Invitational this weekend, Jan. 24-26. The three-day, world-class rugby competition begins Friday, Jan. 24, and will feature seven-man teams from 16 nations. The matches will consist of two seven-minute halves.
The Armed Forces Sevens will be playing in the Elite Mens bracket, which is a step below Team USA. Designed to bring the best players in the Armed Forces together, team members may be selected for the World Class Athlete Program (WCAP) to train with the USA Sevens team in Chula Vista, Calif. Flynn is a member of the Navy.
The USA Sevens tournament will also be played in Las Vegas over the weekend. The games will be featured on NBCSN from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, and 2-4 p.m. Sunday. NBC will pick up the broadcast from 4-6 p.m. Saturday, and 4:30-6 p.m. Sunday.
The USA Sevens tournament is considered one of the measuring stick competitions for the 2016 Olympics when rugby will re-join the summer games. Rugby was part of the Olympics from 1900 to 1925.
