Winners of the 2014 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition, the Telegraph Quartet, performed Friday evening in the Heritage Room of the Legion Memorial Building. The group conducted a masterclass for students during the day.
Based in San Francisco and comprised of violinists Eric Chin (lower left) and Joseph Maile (upper right), violist Pei-Ling Lin (lower right), and cellist Jeremiah Shaw (upper left), Telegraph won the Grand Prize and Gold Medal in the Fischoff competition. Maile told the students the quartet was experimenting with a new seating configuration with the two violinists sitting across from each other. This is to allow better blending of sound, he said.
The Fischoff grand prize winners traditionally stop at Culver Academies during their tour of the area. They conduct a masterclass during the day and perform for the public in the evening. This year, the Akropolis Reed Quintet also played at Culver in September as part of the Double Gold Tour.
Founded in 1973, the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition is conducted at the University of Notre Dame and has grown to become the largest chamber music competition in the world.
