Culver Academies wrestler Kayla Miracle ’14 (Bloomington, Ind.) won individual gold and the U.S. cadet women’s freestyle wrestling team edged host Colombia by three points to win the 2013 Pan American Wrestling Championship team title Aug. 9-11.
Four American athletes won gold, pacing the United States to 82 team points while Colombia finished in second with 79 and Venezuela finished in third with 77. Miracle, wrestling at the 123.4 pounds weight class, went undefeated. She beat bronze medalist Karen Bravo, of Columbia, in her first match and silver medalist Michel Sanchez, of Venezuela, in the title match.
Earlier this summer, Miracle won the 2013 Junior Pan American gold medal at 130 pounds. She then wrestled up at 139 pounds in the Women’s Junior Nationals and finished with a silver medal. She has committed to attend Campbellsville University, where her father Lee Miracle has been named the head coach of the new women’s wrestling program.
Miracle was the first girl to reach the Indiana state wrestling championships in 2012, where she wrestled at 106 pounds. She was the 2012 silver medalist at the Women’s Cadet World Championships.
