Alumni, parents, and fans of Culver Academies athletic teams will have plenty of chances to cheer on their Eagles this weekend. Members of three Culver athletic teams will be vying for state titles and two others are also in action as the sectional and regional level.
The CGA lacrosse team will be playing in the state semifinal in Noblesville Friday and the CMA and CGA track & field teams will be in Bloomington Friday and Saturday for the IHSAA state meets. The CMA golf team will be playing in Warsaw Friday morning, and the CGA tennis No. 1 doubles team will be playing in the state’s individual regional at LaPorte on Saturday.
The 16-0 CGA lacrosse team will play Noblesville in the 6 p.m. semifinal Friday at the White River Soccer Complex (19000 Cumberland Rd., Noblesville), followed by the second semifinal between Cathedral and Bishop Chatard at 8 p.m.
Culver did not play Noblesville or Cathedral during the regular season. The Eagles defeated Bishop Chatard, 10-4, at home on April 21.
The two winning teams will meet in the state championship game at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Also on Saturday, the all-state, academic all-state, all-tournament, and All-America accolades will be announced. Named to All-Region team for the north are Jordi Blackburne, Korryn Brewer, Jenna Thomas, and Tori Styers.
Track & Field
The CMA 4×800 relay team will be running at 4:15 p.m. Friday at the Robert C. Haugh Track & Field Complex at Indiana University (1601 N. Free Lane, Bloomington). Headed to Bloomington are Calloway Bird, Brian Krupp, Zach Dunlap, Shane Pursch, and alternates Hallin Burgan, Joe Chandler, John Michael Hibbard, and Andrew Setzer.
CGA will take to the track Saturday. Addison Coy will be looking to capture her second state title in the 300 hurdles, which are scheduled for 7:20 p.m. She will then join Erin Anderson, Marissa Rivera, and Mary Terhune in the 4×400 relay at 8:30. Alternates are Lauren Broughton, Zoe Dunlap, Arden Shen, and Xianhui Zhao.
Coy won four events at the South Bend St. Joseph Regional. She took blue ribbons in the 300 hurdles, the 100 hurdles, the long jump, and as the anchor of the relay team. It is the first time a CGA track & field athlete won four events at the regional. She scratched from the long jump and the 100 hurdles to concentrate on repeating in the 300 hurdles.
- The CMA golf team is playing in the sectional meet Friday at Rozella Ford Golf Club in Warsaw. The top three teams advance along with the top three individuals not affiliated with an advancing team.
- CGA tennis No. 1 doubles team of Harshita Sangaraju and Rachael Dodson will be playing the first round of the individual regional tournament Saturday at LaPorte. They will face Magdelen Dickerson and Layla Jojo of Elkhart Memorial. Winners advance to the regional championship match.
- The CMA rugby team won the Rugby Indiana Challenge Cup on Memorial Day with a 31-12 win over St. Xavier of Louisville, Ky. CMA advanced with a 27-15 victory over Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger in the semifinal.
- The CGA Varsity 4+ rowing team of Mary Wright, Susan Westman, Kieran Hussey, Mary Jane Wilkerson, and coxswain Emma Doherty finished 11 overall and fifth in the petites at the scholastic nationals.
