The Culver Academies Theatre Department will be performing William Shakespeare’s As You Like It twice this weekend. The play will be presented Friday and Saturday in Eppley Auditorium. The curtain goes up at 7:30 p.m. each night. There is no charge and the performances are open to the public.
A pastoral comedy, As You Like It follows its heroine Rosalind (Emma Kiewitt ’18, Fishers, Indiana) as she flees persecution in her uncle’s court. Accompanied by her cousin Celia (Madeline Petrucelli ’20, Plymouth, Indiana), she finds safety – and love – in the Forest of Arden. In the forest, the two encounter a host of characters, notably Lord Jacques (Simon Hayes ’20, New York), who offers many of Shakespeare’s most quoted lines, such as “All the world’s a stage” and “too much of a good thing.”
Shakespeare is believed to have written the play in 1599 and the first performance was in 1603. It was published in the First Folio in 1623.
