The Culver Academies speech team won the first sectional championship in school history on Saturday, March 2. The team qualified 34 of 40 entries for the Indiana High School Forensic Association’s state tournament, including five sectional champions and seven runners-up.

The sectional was conducted at McCutcheon High School, Lafayette, with the top six qualifiers moving on to the state tournament. The 34 Culver qualifiers is also a school record. The state tournament will be conducted at Fishers High School, near Indianapolis, on Saturday, March 23.

Sectional champions are: Aerisa Ahn and Melissa Ma, Original Performance; A.C. Betekhtin, Prose Interpretation; Alex Ding, Discussion; Erin Luck and Gabby Wells, Scripted Duo; and Tyler Sorg, Broadcast.

Runners-up include Abel Barrera Duran, Discussion; David Brown, U.S. Extemporaneous; Emily Hernandez, declamation; Todd Newton, humor; Hallie Rauch, International Extemporaneous; Caitlin Schwartz, Broadcast; and Katrina Willis, Prose Interpretation
