INDIANAPOLIS – The Culver Academies speech team completed the 2012-13 season at the Indiana High School Forensic Association’s State Speech Tournament at Fishers High School. Twenty-one members of speech team gave up part of their spring break to compete in the tournament on March 23.
Out of 21 state qualifiers that competed 13 broke to the semifinals and four reached the finals, placing among the best six speakers in their respective events. The 21 competitors helped Culver place third out of more than 30 Class 2A schools and seventh in the state overall.
Making the finals were: Alex Ding, runner-up, Discussion; Lauren Engelbrecht, third, Poetry Interpretation; Todd Newton, fourth, Poetry Interpretation; and Anna-Christina Betekhtin, fourth, Prose Interpretation.
Breaking into the semifinal round were: Caitlin Schwartz, Broadcast; Tyler Sorg, Broadcast; Emily Hernandez and Todd Newton, Scripted Duo; Aerisa Ahn and Melissa Ma, Original Performance; Ethan Carter, Prose Interpretation; Aerisa Ahn, Poetry Interpretation; Lauren Engelbrecht and Erin Luck, Scripted Duo; Dana Brown, Humorous Interpretation; and Hallie Rauch, International Extemporaneous.
Ding and Engelbrecht earned first team All-State recognition while Newton and Betekhtin garnered second team honors. Fifty-three students participated on the speech team this season, which included winning the first sectional in school history.
