On Friday, Nov. 22, four members of the Culver Academies sailing team will be traveling to the Southern Yacht Club in New Orleans to compete in the Allstate Sugar Bowl Great Oaks Invitational Regatta on Lake Pontchartrain Saturday and Sunday.

Representing Culver at the regatta will be CGA senior Victoria Jennings (Rochester, Ind.) and CMA first-classmen Sage Parin (Mishawaka, Ind.), Alan Simonini (Cornelius, N.C.), and Andrew VanDeVelde (Raleigh, N.C.). All four are captains of the sailing team.

Coach Quentin Chafee said conditions will dictate which two-person team will be manning the Culver boat during the competition. Jennings will be in one slot with Parin currently projected in the other. Simonini and VanDeVelde will be alternates.

The Great Oaks is a national-level regatta and is hosted by the South East Interscholastic Sailing Association (SEISA) for the Interscholastic Sailing Association (ISSA), which governs secondary school sailing in the United States in both independent and public high schools.

This past weekend, a team of 12 went to the MISSA (Midwest Interscholastic Sailing Association) Great Lakes Championship Regatta at the Chicago Yacht Club.  Weather conditions canceled racing on Sunday but the team did race on Saturday. Culver qualified for the Midwest championship at the Detroit Country Day School Great Lakes Qualifier Regatta at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club on Sept. 14-15.
