The Culver Academies indoor tennis facility has been recognized by the United States Tennis Association as one of 12 winners of its 33rd annual USTA Facility Awards Program. The program recognizes excellence in the construction or renovation of tennis facilities throughout the country.
The five-court facility, which opened this spring, is part of the Gable Tennis Complex. The 15 outdoor courts and tennis center were honored in 2010. The indoor center is the lone winner in the Best Educational Institution category.
With the addition of the new indoor facility, Culver Academies offers year-round tennis activities and training. The USTA noted that practice and games during the school year and tennis lessons during Culver Summer Schools & Camps “has embraced many of our initiatives, including youth tennis utilizing 36- and 60-foot courts, introducing thousands of new players to the sport each year.”
Kurt Kamperman, chief executive for Community Tennis at the USTA, added, “It is outstanding tennis facilities like the Culver Academies indoor tennis facility that help us grow the game at the grass-roots level.”
Facilities were judged on overall layout and adaption to site; excellence of court surface and lights; ease of maintenance; accommodations for players, spectators and press/officials; aesthetics; graphics; amenities such as casual seating for spectators, food services and social areas; and the facilities’ participation in USTA programs.
