Culver Girls Academy rising sophomore Jessica Greenman (Plantation, Fla.) has been named one of the winners of the 2013 National Sportsmanship Award, sponsored by the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association. Eight award winners were announced at the 2013 Western National Finals.

The Intercollegiate Horse Show Association works in conjunction with the Interscholastic Equestrian Association. The IEA recognizes the top riders from eight zones across the county, then a judging committee selects an overall winner. Greenman placed fourth overall and represented Zone 5, which included Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, and Ohio.

Each award applicant is judged on equine-related activities and memberships; school-related activities; volunteer and community service activities; and academic achievement. The applicants must also submit a 250-word essay that explains how horses and/or equestrian competitions have influenced his/her life. Three recommendations are also needed; one from an equine professional, one from a teacher or school advisor, and one from an additional person of the candidate’s choice.
