The Culver Connection wound its way to the turf of Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday, Aug. 23. Shortly after the Culver Military Academy football team took the field for the pregame ceremonies, the “Indianapolis 500” Gordon Pipers came on to the field to perform prior to the national anthem.

The football team was invited by USA Football to attend the Colts preseason game against the New Orleans Saints. CMA was the first high school team in Indiana to participate in the Heads Up Tackling program in 2013. USA Football used the game to kick off its 2014 campaign.

The Gordon Pipers are famous for their performances during the Indianapolis 500 Festival in May. One member of the Gordon Pipers was Tom Toole ’78, an alumnus of Troop B who lives in Brownsburg, Ind. While standing on the field, Toole asked if there were any members of his former unit on the team and Kyle Jackson ’15 (Corpus Christi, Texas) came out to meet him.

After the two groups left the field, Toole came over to the team’s waiting area to catch up on Culver events and exchange a couple of quick stories with Jackson. The chance meeting just shows the Culver Connection is everywhere, even in the end zone of an NFL stadium.
