Dowd wins Calder Cup
Nic Dowd ’08 and his Manchester (N.H.) Monarchs teammates lifted the Calder Cup Saturday (June 13) after defeating the Utica Comets in five games. It was the first American Hockey League title in the club’s history and comes just one year after the parent team, the LA Kings, won the Stanley Cup.
Dowd had the assist on the game-winning goal by Vincent LoVerde, which put the Monarchs up, 2-0. The former Culver Military Academy hockey star played in all 19 playoff games, scoring seven goals and tallying six assists for a total of 13 points. During the 75-game regular season, Dowd scored nine goals and dished out 32 assists for 41 points.
Dowd played his college hockey at St. Cloud State University. He signed with the Kings after his senior season.
Neer captains NCAA champion Ducks
CGA alumna Waverly Neer ’11 helped the Oregon Ducks women’s track and field team to the NCAA outdoor title on Saturday. Neer finished fifth and Molly Grabill took fourth in the 10,000 meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday to score an unexpected nine points for the Ducks (post-race interview).
Those nine points ended up being the winning margin as Oregon held off second place Kentucky, 59-50.
The University of Oregon’s men’s and women’s teams swept the team titles at Hayward Field. It was the first team title for the women in 30 years and the first time both teams won in the same year. Neer, a four-time All-American, was a captain on the women’s team.
Inside Lacrosse honors CMA alumni
Two members of the 2014 CMA prep lacrosse team were named by Inside Lacrosse to the Top 25 Freshmen list for 2015.
Matt Neufeldt, now a long-stick middle for the University of Maryland, was at No. 11 after finishing the season with one goal, 57 ground balls, and 21 caused turnovers in 19 games. Joel Tinney, a middie for Johns Hopkins, was named at the No. 5 slot. He was the Big Ten Rookie of the Year after scoring 28 goals and dishing out 10 assists in 18 games.
State, regional lacrosse honors
Several members of Culver’s boys and girls lacrosse teams received post-season accolades. Here are some of the honors:

All-state (CMA Varsity Lacrosse): Matt Turner, second team middie. Honorable mentions: Mark Ferrino, attack; Joe Johnson, middie; Luc Anderson, middie; Laken Alles, defense; Nate Clurman, defense; and Reeves McKenney, goalie. All-academic: Alles and Stuart Johnson.
All-state (CGA Lacrosse): Anne Marie Wright, first team; Korryn Brewer and Erin Thomas, second team. Northern Region: Jordan Blackburne, Annie Shea, Brewer, Thomas, Wright.
