Culver Academies’ Global Studies Institute hosted the Hangzhou Arts Academy Wednesday, Oct. 1. Hangzhou students performed traditional Chinese music and dances that evening. This is the sixth year Hangzhou students have visited Culver after performing at the Great Lakes Confucius Institute Music Festival at Valparaiso University. Culver Academies’ String Orchestra also played at the festival Monday evening.
Professor Jianyun Meng, director of the university’s Confucius Institute, said the Hangzhou students arrived in the United States on Sept. 24 and have performed seven times throughout the Chicago and northern Indiana. They will return to Zhejiang, China on Friday.
Culver Academies maintains a Confucius Classroom as part of the Global Studies Institute. The partnership between Culver and Valparaiso, with support from the Confucius Institute in Beijing, promotes the study of Chinese language and culture, encourages exchange programs with China, sponsors public events for the wider community, and enhances the understanding and friendship between the young people of China and the United States.
