Sam Concannon, the No. 1 singles tennis player for Culver Military Academy, will be participating in the individual state tennis tournament this weekend at Park Tudor School in Indianapolis. Concannon ’16 (Indianapolis) finished as the state runner-up in 2014.
He will be playing Crown Point’s Bryce Bonin in his quarterfinal round match at 2 p.m. Friday. Concannon is currently 19-0 (6-0 in the tournament) and Bonin is 14-1 (7-0). Everyone must have unblemished tournament records in order to qualify. The two met in the semi-state last year with Concannon coming out on top.
The semifinals will see the winner of Concannon’s match play again at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the
championship match scheduled for 2 p.m. Just eight No. 1 singles players and eight No. 1 doubles teams play in the individual state tournament.
Concannon moved to the individual tournament after he won his state quarterfinal match against Jeffersonville’s Brock Winchell, 6-1, 6-0. The Eagles lost the team competition though, 3-2.
This was the second straight year the team reached the state quarterfinals and first time since 1995-96 the Eagles have made back-to-back trips to Indianapolis. The team finished as state runner-up in 2007.
Park Tudor is located at 7200 N. College Ave., Indianapolis. Admission is $5.
