Culver Military Academy’s No. 1 singles tennis player Sam Concannon ’16 finished as the runner-up in the state individual tennis tournament on Saturday, Oct. 25. He lost 6-2, 6-0 to No. 1 seed Danny Rayl, a senior and University of Notre Dame-commit, from Park Tudor School in the championship match in Indianapolis. Concannon entered the state finals as the No. 2 seed.
Concannon, a second-classman from Indianapolis, beat Northeastern’s Grant Esposito, 4-6, 7-6 (10), 4-0 (ret), staving off six match points in Saturday’s semifinal to advance. Rayl beat Ian Landwehr of Yorktown, 6-0, 7-5. Concannon finished the season 24-1. Rayl finished undefeated at 21-0.
Concannon advanced to Saturday’s round with a quarterfinal win over Bloomington South’s Will Piekarsky in three sets Friday. Concannon dropped the first set in a tiebreaker, 6-7 (3), then came back to win the next two sets, 6-0, 6-4.
The CMA tennis team also reached the state finals, finishing in the top eight. Several members of the team received all-state honors. Concannon was named first team singles and Chris Bilicic ’16 (Locust Valley, N.Y.) was named to the honorable mention singles list. The doubles teams of Evan Dillon ’16 (Bedford, Ind.)/Ian Smith ’18 (Bloomington, Ind.) and William Bilicic ’16 (Locust Valley, N.Y.)/Brian Tao ’16 (Canton, Mich.) were also named as honorable mention.
