The 19-2 Culver Military tennis team will be facing the 18-2 Penn Kingsmen when the Eagles host the semi-state on Saturday. The winner will head to the state finals in Indianapolis next week.
CMA advanced by defeating Plymouth in the first round of the regional, 4-1, and taking Warsaw, 5-0, in the championship Wednesday. It was the fourth straight regional title for the Eagles and the 13th overall.
Culver won its 14th consecutive sectional crown last week, defeating North Judson, 5-0, in the first round and Rochester, 4-1, in the championship. The Eagles have taken the sectional crown 28 times overall.
While Culver and Penn are squaring off on the front courts, Carmel and Munster will be playing on the backcourts of the Gable Tennis Complex. Both matches will begin at noon. There is a $5 charge.
Golf finishes 9th
After shooting the worst 18-hole score this season in the opening round of the state finals Friday, the Culver Girls Academy came back Saturday to finish ninth overall and freshman Reese Wilson (Chicago) finished 10th individually.
Making its first team appearance since 1999, CGA shot a combined 687 for 36 holes at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Indiana. The Eagles shot 349 on Friday and came back Saturday with a 338 to finish in the top 10. Zionsville won the team title with a combined score of 620 for the two-day tournament. Fifteen schools played in the team competition.
Wilson shot a combined 155 over 36 holes (79-76), just 11 strokes above par, to take 10th place. Kayla Benge of Plainfield won medalist honors with a 145. Wilson was one of four underclassmen to finish in the top 10.
Junior Amanda Kurteff (Plainfield, Illinois) shot a 165 (82-83) to finish tied for 39th spot. Freshman Masako Hatano (Shanghai, China) shot 183 (93-90), freshman Katherine Shin (West Lafayette, Indiana) shot a 185 (96-89), and sophomore Jiayi Wang (Beijing, China) shot a 191 (91-100) to round out the scoring. The top four scores make up the team total.
The IHSAA Sunday announced the pairings for the first round of the football sectionals across Indiana. In Class 4A, Sectional 19, Culver Military (6-1) will be hosting Northridge (7-0) on Friday, Oct. 20. The teams have one common opponent in South Bend St. Joseph. The Raiders defeated the Indians, 27-10, on Aug. 25. The Eagles will host St. Joe this Friday at Oliver Field. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
