Culver Military Academy polo player Eduardo Margalef ’17 (Aurora, Ill.) has been selected to compete in the 2014 National Youth Tournament Series Championship at the end of the month.
The most celebrated United States Polo Association players under the age of 19 will compete Saturday, Aug. 30, and Sunday, Aug. 31, at the San Diego Polo Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif. The winning team will receive the Cecil Smith Cup trophy.
Margalef will represent Zone 2 along with players representing Atlanta, King City, Ontario, and Toronto. A total of 260 players competed in 27 tournaments across the nation with 127 riders achieving NYTS All-Star status. Four players from each zone were invited from that group to compete at the national championship.
Margalef qualified by achieving an all-star rating at tournaments he played in Michigan and Minnesota. He was then selected from the pool of eligible players.
He played on the CMA varsity polo team as a fourth-classman last season. Margalef has been playing polo since he was nine or 10 and started riding with his mother at about eight months of age. “When I was big enough to ride on my own, my mom got a special small saddle that was made just for little kids,” he said
Margalef hasn’t met his three teammates yet, but understands they have a lot of experience. “We should be a pretty solid team,” he said.
The semi-final matches will be played on Saturday with a consolation match on Sunday, followed by the championship at 1 p.m. The San Diego Polo Club is open to the public and spectators are encouraged to come watch the action.
