The Culver Military Academy Corps of Drums will perform in the DrumLine Battle competition Friday, Nov. 21, at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention in Indianapolis. The DrumLine Battle is open to the public.
The battle begins at 11 a.m. in Exhibit Hall F of the Indiana Convention Center. Each performance is limited to two minutes, so the pace will be fast and furious. Culver is expected to perform at 11:16 a.m. and will be facing Ben Davis High School.
There are four high school and four college/independent drumlines participating. The high school competition will start at 11:10, with Bloomington North facing Owen Valley, followed by Culver and Ben Davis. The high school championship will follow at 11:22 a.m.
The college/independent battle will begin with Lamar University facing off against Ball State at 11:28 and the University of Cincinnati vs. the Jefferson Street Parade Band at 11:34. The collegiate final will follow at 11:42, then the high school and collegiate champions square off at 11:48 a.m.
The PAS DrumLine Battle coincides with the opening of an exhibit at the PAS Museum on the history of military drumming, called “No Drummer, No Direction.”
The CMA Corps of Drums’ unique military style, which borrows from British, Moroccan, and American military drumming traditions, is very different from the style used by most drum corps. It will be interesting to see how the judges and audience react to the difference.
Single-session tickets are $20, which covers the entire Marching Percussion Festival not just the DrumLine Battle. Friday’s events include an interactive session (a marching percussion competition in a masterclass format with judges working with the groups), beginning at 9:10 am; exhibition for Individual Competition award winners (soloists in high school multi-percussion, high school keyboard, college keyboard, high school multi-tenors, and college and high school snare, and college small ensemble), and the Drumline Battle at 11 a.m.
Spectators should enter the convention center from the Maryland Street entrance of the Indiana Cenvention Center (opposite the Westin hotel), then go to the PAS registration area to purchase a Marching Percussion Festival session ticket.
