A 2011 graduate of Culver Military Academy has been chosen by U.S. Military Academy to serve as the First Captain of the Corps of Cadets for the 2014-2015 academic year.

Austin Welch (Winnetka, Ill.) was named to the Academy’s highest cadet position on Aug. 4. Welch, who will also be known as the Brigade Commander, is the second CMA graduate in four years to be named First Captain. Charlie Phelps ’08 was named First Captain in 2011-2012.

As First Captain, Welch is responsible for the overall performance of the approximately 4,400-member Corps of Cadets. He follows in the footsteps of other notable First Captains such as John J. Pershing (who visited Culver on Dec. 7, 1922), Douglas MacArthur, and William Westmoreland.

The First Captain is similar to the CMA Regimental Commander. His duties include implementing a class agenda and acting as a liaison between the Corps and the administration. In addition, Welch is the top of a pyramid of cadet commanders who make up the chain-of-command for the Corps of Cadets at West Point.

Along with Welch and Phelps, Keegan Kinkade ’06 (Greenwood, Ind.) was named the Brigade Commander at the U.S. Naval Academy in 2010. A summer graduate, Kevin Berto NB’09 served as the 2013 Regimental Commander at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Alex Canacci ’10 (Culver) served as the Brigade Sergeant Major at West Point for the 2013-2014 school year and received the esteemed Knox Trophy as the top graduating cadet.
