Culver Girls Academy fencers walked away with the overall championship trophy and two (epee and foil) of three weapons team titles at the Great Lakes High School Championships. CGA placed third in the team saber competition. And the Culver Military team was not far behind, finishing second overall while placing second in the foil and saber and third in epee.
In the individual competition, CMA’s Matt Janney ’15 (Valparaiso, Ind.) and Theo Browne ’15 (Culver) won gold medals. Janney came out on top in a field of 41 competitors in the epee. Browne was the best of a 43-man field in the foil. Steve Li ’15 (Changchun, China) finished sixth to reach the podium in epee and Michael Abrell ’15 (Chicago) and John Oosterhoff ’15 (Momence, Ill.) finished with bronze medals out of a field of 49 in the saber.
On the women’s side, Megan Yeager ’15 (Culver) won a saber silver medal and Krista Trefren ’15 (Hotchkiss, Colo.) took seventh out of field of 38 fencers. Bea Verrecchia ’17 (Firenze, Italy) captured bronze in the foil competition, which featured 39 competitors. Jackie Pentecost ’15 (Champion, Pa.) won a bronze medal in epee and Alice Kim ’15 (Seoul, South Korea) finished sixth and Madi Berman ’15 (Boca Raton, Fla.) was seventh out of 37 fencers.
In conference dual meet series, CGA was 13-0 to the claim the overall conference title. The epee team was 12-1 to win its championship, and the foil team was 13-0 to claim its conference crown. The saber was 11-2 to finish second in the team competition.
CMA was 12-1 overall to take second in the conference. The epee team was 10-3 for fourth place. Foil was 11-2 for third place. The saber team was 12-1 for second place.
