The University of Connecticut is hosting polo’s version of March Madness this weekend when the Girls National Interscholastic Championship tournament begins on Thursday, March 7. Culver Girls Academy will be one of the five teams in contention for the national title in Storrs, Conn.
CGA advanced to the national tournament with wins over teams from Austin and Houston, Texas, during the central regional held at Culver in mid-February. The team will kick off the tournament with a match against wildcard selection Newport of Portsmouth, R.I., at 7 p.m., Thursday.
On Friday, host UConn will play the team from Maui, Hawaii, in the first game, followed by the matchup of Maryland, from College Park, against the winner of Thursday’s game. The consolation matches will be played on Saturday and the national title game will be held on Sunday.
Sponsored by the United States Polo Association, the Interscholastic/Intercollegiate polo programs have experienced tremendous growth over the past two years. From 2010 to 2012, 31 new polo teams have joined the I/I program, bringing the total of 113 this season. Women’s polo is the fastest growing demographic of U.S. polo.
