The Culver Girls Academy polo team is headed to the National Interscholastic Championship tournament after two big wins at the regional level. The girls will play for the national title at the Empire Polo Club, Indio, Calif., on March 4-6.
CGA advanced to the national tournament with a 12-9 victory of Houston A. The girls were down 7-4 at halftime, but outscored Houston 8-2 in the second half to seal the victory. They advanced to the regional championship match with a 19-8 win in the semifinal against the Houston JV team. Houston A advanced with a 12-4 win over Midland (Texas) B.
The regional tournament was played at the ERG Polo Complex in Brookshire, Texas, and hosted by the Houston Polo Club. Making the trip over long weekend were seniors Christina Aliev and Ally Vaughn, and juniors Ashley Dillard, Mikayla Hay, Yi-ting Lu, and Emma Vigy.
Davis qualifies for state
Third-classman Adam Davis (Granger, Ind.) qualified for the state wrestling tournament in Indianapolis after finishing fourth at the East Chicago Semi-State Saturday.
He pinned his first opponent, Skylaer Gomez, of LaPorte, in 2:55; and defeated Jon Anderson of Lafayette Jefferson in an overtime tiebreaker, 2-1. He lost a 9-0 decision to Jeremiah Reitz, Griffith; then dropped a 4-2 decision to Crown Point’s Jonathan Moran In the consolation.
Davis’ first match Friday night will be against Dylan Culp, Warren Central. Davis is currently 38-8 on the season and Culp is 38-5. The state tournament is at Banker’s Life Fieldhouse. The first round gets underway at 6 p.m.
