First-time qualifiers

The Culver Girls Academy Prep hockey team will take a major step forward when the Eagles make their first appearance in the USA Hockey Girls Tier-I 19U National Championship. The top 16 teams in the country will play at the Great Park Ice and Sports Complex in Irvine, Calif., from Thursday, April 4, through Monday, April 8.

CGA advanced to the national tournament by winning the Mid-Am district tournament March 8-10, defeating Gilmour Academy, 3-2, and the No. 16 Pittsburgh Penquins Elite, 1-0. The team is currently 13-12-4 on the season.

Pool play begins Thursday. CGA’s first game will be at 3 p.m. against the Boston Jr. Eagles on NHL Rink 1. That will be followed by an 11:15 a.m. game on Friday against Detroit Honeybaked in the 5 Point Arena. The third round-robin game will be against NJ Colonials in the Olympic Rink on Saturday at 4:40 p.m.

Following pool play, the top two teams from each division will advance to the quarterfinals Sunday afternoon. The semi-finals will be played Sunday night and the championship game on Monday morning.
