Excuse the Culver Girls Academy golf team for missing Fall Parents Weekend, they will be playing in the state finals at the Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel this weekend.
CGA advanced after placing second at the Lafayette Jefferson Regional on Saturday (Sept. 23) at the par-72 Battle Ground Golf Club. The girls finished with a team score of 326, just four strokes off the pace set by the Jeff girls, who were playing on their home course.
Reese Wilson ’21 (Chicago) and Amanda Kurteff ’19 (Plainfield, Illinois) shot matching 77s to pace the team. Masako Hatano ’21 (Sanghai, China) shot an 84, followed by Jiayi Wang ’20 (Beijing, China) at 88 and Katie Shin ’21 (West Lafayette, Indiana) with a 92.
The lowest four scores form the team score. The top three teams and top five individuals not connected to an advancing team move on the state finals on Friday and Saturday. Valparaiso is the third team to advance out of the regional.
The girls advanced to the regional with an impressive 33-stroke victory at the LaPorte Sectional on Sept. 15. The tournament was played at the par-72 Beechwood Golf Club. The Eagles finished with a combined score of 335 (Wilson 74, Kurteff 83, Wang 89, Hatano 89, Shin 92). LaPorte finished in second with a 368, followed by Michigan City at 399.
The last time CGA played as a team at the state finals was in 1999. Caroline Haase ’03 was the last individual to represent CGA at the tournament. Haase played in the 2002 state tournament and finished 11th. She won the tournament as a junior in 2001, was the 2000 state runner-up as a sophomore, and played a member of the CGA team in 1999.
