Benn becomes first CMA player drafted by MLL
Johns Hopkins attackman Brandon Benn ’10 was selected by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the fifth round of the Major League Lacrosse collegiate draft on Jan. 10. Benn became the first Culver Military Academy player selected to play at the professional level.
Preparing for his senior season at Hopkins, Benn was the 40th pick overall. Benn has led the Blue Jays in scoring for the last two years. He is first Hopkins player to score more than 30 goals in two consecutive season since 1998-1999 and is carrying a 16-game goal-scoring streak into the 2014 season.
In three years at Culver, Benn was a two-time All-American, accumulated over 280 points, and was a member of three state championship teams.
CMA alumni help IU take rugby title
Two former members of the Culver rugby team were able to hoist the Big Ten championship trophy when Indiana University defeated Michigan, 58-38, in November.
Conor Casey ’10 and Jacob Schubert ’12 started for IU in the championship played at the Moose Grounds in Elkhart, Ind. Casey scored IU’s second try and Shubert made solid contributions in the lineouts and scrums.
CMA head coach Darrell Knowlton spent part of his winter break in Tempe, Ariz., where he served as a shadow coach and assistant at the High School All-American Camp.
Suter in Olympics, Liles in Carolina
Minnesota Wild defenseman Ryan Suter ’03 will be playing for Team USA at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. Team USA will open play against Slovakia on Feb. 13. Suter will be playing in his second Olympics. Team USA won the Silver Medal in 2010.
Former Olympian John-Michael Liles ’99 is now playing for the NHL’s Carolina Hurricanes after agreeing to a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Hurricanes were 4-0 since the trade and Liles, a defenseman, scored a goal against the Leafs when the two teams met in Raleigh, N.C., on Jan. 9. The ’Canes won, 6-1.
