Three Detroit-area Upper Campers had the opportunity to meet with Roger Penske, himself a 1950 alumnus of Woodcraft Camp, as he hosted them at the 2016 Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix on June 5.
Christopher Reynolds (Aviation) and Nigel Dufeal (Troop) are returning Summer students. Micah Stroud will begin her first Culver summer as a member of the girls Horsemanship unit, Deck 7, now in its second summer.
Penske established the Culver Changing Detroit scholarship to support Detroit youth while they attend Culver Summer Schools & Camps. The group was also joined by Rayford Dexter El W’11, ’15, who is now at Michigan State University and a past beneficiary of Culver Changing Detroit. Dexter El has returned to Culver as a Summer Schools & Camps staff member.
Reynolds, Dufeal, and Stroud, along with Dexter El, were treated to a behind-the-scenes look at all that goes on at a large-scale race. They also met Penske driver Will Power, who went on to win the event.
Culver Changing Detroit has enabled exceptional students from the Detroit area to attend Culver since 2008.
