Culver sports fans will be busy keeping track of all the teams in tournament action this weekend. CMA tennis, CGA soccer, CGA volleyball, and both cross country teams are already in state play and CMA football will be wrapping up its regular season Friday evening.
The CMA tennis team reached the state finals for the ninth time overall and the fourth time in the past five years with a 3-2 win over Munster on Saturday, Oct. 6. The team will travel to Center Grove High School to play Indianapolis North Central at 11 a.m. Friday. A victory in the quarterfinals would advance them to the semifinals at North Central on Saturday at 10 a.m., with the championship slated for 2 p.m.
The football team will host Bremen at 7:30 p.m. Friday night. It is the final regular season game and senior night. The Lions are 7-1, having lost their first game of the season last week to Jimtown. The Eagles are 5-2, coming off a hard-fought 14-11 win at South Bend St. Joseph.
At 10 a.m., the CGA soccer team will play NorthWood in the first semifinal game of Class 2A regional at Plymouth High School. A victory in the morning would send the Eagles to the championship at 7 p.m.
The Eagles advanced with a 6-2 win over West Lafayette in the rain-delayed Kankakee Valley sectional championship game Monday evening. It was CGA’s ninth sectional title overall.
Culver will also host the girls and boys cross country regional Saturday morning. The two five-kilometer races will feature CMA and CGA running against nine other schools. CGA advanced with a second place finish and CMA came in fifth in last week’s sectional. The girls race will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the boys at approximately 11:10 a.m.
Both teams will be competing for a top-five finish and a chance to advance to the New Prairie semi-state on Saturday, Oct. 20. The top 10 individuals from non-advancing teams will also move on.
The volleyball team defeated South Bend Washington, 25-10, 25-10, 25-14, to advance to the sectional semifinals against John Glenn. The tournament is being played at Mishawaka Marian. Game time is 11 a.m., Saturday.
The CGA golf team has already completed its season, making another run to the state. The girls finished eighth overall and Reese Wilson finished ninth individually. The team finished ninth and Wilson was 10th at the 2017 tournament.
