Louis Belpedio ’14, a junior defenseman for the Miami University Redhawks hockey team, is in the running for college hockey’s top honor: the Hobey Baker Memorial Award.
Belpedio becomes the fourth Culver Military Academy player to be honored with a nomination. John-Michael Liles ’99 was a finalist while playing at Michigan State; Blake Geoffrion ’06 won the award in 2010 while playing for Wisconsin; and Nic Dowd ’08 was a finalist in 2014.
Online fan voting is now open on hobeybaker.com and the Hobey Baker Facebook page. Fans can vote for their favorite player and fan voting will be an important factor in the balloting outcome. The player’s nomination was based on sports information directors from NCAA Division I hockey programs.
Fans are asked to keep in mind the qualities that a nominee must display: exhibit strength and character, both on and off the ice; contribute to the integrity of the team; display outstanding skills in all phases of the game; and show scholastic achievement and sportsmanship.
Belpedio became the 23rd CMA player drafted by a National Hockey League team in 2014. He was selected by the Minnesota Wild in the third round and was the 80th player taken overall. Ryan Suter ’03 is also a Wild defenseman.
Belpedio spent his first two years playing on Culver’s U16 team before joining the U.S. National Development Program. He served as captain of the US U-18 team that won gold in April 2014. He also served as the alternate captain for Team USA in the World Junior Championship last season. While at Miami, he has played in every game except the two games he missed while playing in the junior championship.
